General Anesthesiology:
What to Know and Expect
Whether a patient is undergoing major surgery or a non-nvasive diagnostic procedure, our anesthesiologists will work to ensure that the person is as comfortable as possible.
As part of their training, anesthesiologists become qualified to perform cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation, stabilize and prepare patients for emergency surgery, provide advanced life support and control pain.
Our anesthesiologists will:
- Consult with and evaluate the patient before surgery to determine any medical needs and identify preexisting conditions.
- Develop an anesthesia plan that is specific to the procedure being performed and the patient’s needs.
- Continually monitor vital functions, including airway management.
- Provide intraoperative life support and pain control as needed throughout and immediately following a procedure.
- Consult with the surgeon on pain and airway management during the procedure and the immediate postoperative period.
