What to Know and Expect
Cardiothoracic anesthesia focuses on the care of patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery and related procedures. Together with a cardiologist or cardiac surgeon, cardiothoracic anesthesiologists are essential members of a patient’s cardiac care team.
Piedmont Triad Anesthesia’s cardiothoracic specialists are board certified and fellowship trained. In addition, they frequently participate in educational courses and symposia on advances in their field.
A PTA cardiothoracic anesthesiologist will:
- Monitor the patient’s vital signs throughout the procedure and the immediate postoperative period.
- Work with the surgical team to make medical decisions on a patient’s behalf, as necessary, during the procedure.
- Assist in managing a patient’s care, including preexisting medical conditions, throughout surgery and the immediate postoperative period.
- Monitor and manage pain during the immediate postoperative period to make the patient as comfortable as possible.
- Consult on issues pertaining to patient care, including anticoagulation and airway management and cardiopulmonary bypass.
